A migrant was arrested Tuesday for allegedly beating up a 50-year-old man with a rock and attempting to steal his wallet on a Brooklyn street, police and law enforcement sources said.
Cops nabbed Jason Sanchez, 26, after responding to a robbery-in-progress in Greenpoint around 2:35 p.m., according to the NYPD.
The assault and robbery happened on Tuesday. Kyle Mazza/NurPhoto/ShutterstockSanchez, who sources said is a Guatemalan migrant, allegedly hit the victim in the head with a rock and then tried to swipe his wallet.
The victim suffered cuts to the face, but refused medical attention at the scene, police said.
The suspect was taken into custody without incident and charged with attempted robbery, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the NYPD.
Sanchez’s last known address, according to sources, is 146 Clay Street, a homeless shelter near the crime scene.
Tuesday’s crime is the latest allegedly involving a migrant, which prompted Mayor Eric Adams to call for better cooperation between the NYPD and ICE last week.
Adams said the city should potentially contact the federal agency over migrants accused of serious crimes, but would need the City Council to alter current laws.
